NASA’s “Hidden Figures”

Christian Dorothy Vaughn, Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Christine Darden were mathematicians, engineers, and computer programmers working at NASA Langley during the “Space Race”. They were also all women were people of faith. Their story was brought to light by Margot Lee Shetterly in her best-selling book Hidden Figures, which was made into a movie of the same name. Jackson, Shirley Ann (1946- )

Christian Shirley Ann Jackson was the first African-American woman to obtain a Ph.D. from MIT. She went on to work at Fermilab, Bell Laboratories, and in the 1990’s was made head of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Montessori, Maria (1870-1952)

Planck, Max (1858-1947)

Vatican Observatory Foundation Faith and Science

Christian Max Planck received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918 “in recognition of the services he rendered to the advancement of Physics by his discovery of energy quanta”. Planck made many contributions to physics, but is remembered primarily for his role as the originator of quantum theory.
