As with any technology and hardware, the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope requires ongoing care and maintenance. Dedicated in 1993, the VATT today is still one of the world's best imaging telescopes. However, innovations in technology continue to open new doors for astronomers and the VOF must continue to apply modern technology to the VATT.
Specific needs for the VATT include:
- Upgraded video converters for telescope guidance and observation support
- Digital monitors to support upgraded video converters and improve image quality
- Motor control and filter wheel mechanical upgrade in the guide box
- Sensors for remote observing monitoring (to increase safety and system reliability during remote operation of telescope)
